Grok for Startups: how to apply for credits and use them
In 60 seconds
Verified on October 23, 2026 against the official Grok for Startups page, program terms and application form. The terms show October 7, 2026 as their last update.
Grok for Startups offers promotional credits for Grok, Grok Build, Grok Bot and Grok API, sharing one balance. The page announces 20% on approval and the remaining 80% once you are up and running; your approval email sets the specific conditions. No typical or maximum award is published. Unless the approval says otherwise, credits expire six months after being applied to the team account. Eligibility for companies in Latin America or Spain remains officially unconfirmed.
You need a Team ID and a company email associated with that team. Prepare verifiable funding, revenue and AI usage information, plus the workflow you intend to automate. Approval and award size are at the provider’s discretion; applying does not guarantee credits.
What Grok for Startups covers
The program is offered by SpaceXAI LLC, called SpaceXSI in the terms. The four eligible services share a balance as made available to your account, with possible allocations or limits per service (§1.7 and §6.1). A shared balance does not establish unlimited access or capacity for every product.
The program page describes an aim of covering six to twelve months of real usage. That goal sets neither your award amount nor a longer contractual expiry: the terms do not guarantee any particular usage duration (§5.1 and §6.4). Keep the written offer and check the applied balance before adding it to your budget.
Who qualifies
SpaceXSI considers funding, investors, revenue, current AI spending, traction, team size, intended use, program capacity and verification (§3.2). It publishes no universal minimum score. The form asks about the latest funding round and investors; if your company has not raised capital, ask how to represent that situation accurately.
The terms allow one pending application and one award per company group, including affiliates (§4.1 and §5.2). You must disclose all previous promotional credits received from the provider or its affiliates (§4.2). A VC or accelerator referral may include a portfolio minimum, but that benefit applies only if your application is approved (§4.4); the partners page describes this route.
The applicant must be at least 18 and authorized to bind the company (§2.2). Exclusions cover sanctions or export-control lists and countries or territories under comprehensive US sanctions or embargoes. Employees, contractors, agents and representatives of the companies listed in §3.1, along with their immediate families, are also excluded. The program is unavailable where prohibited or restricted by law (§3.3).
What if my company is in Latin America or Spain?
The official sources reviewed do not confirm eligibility for Latin America or Spain. The terms publish no list of admitted countries and state no requirement for a US legal entity. The absence of a named exclusion does not establish your company’s eligibility.
Before committing integration work, ask the program team at startups@x.ai, the contact published in §5.4. State your company’s countries of incorporation and operation, and ask whether it can participate, which services would be available and what documentation is required. Keep credits awaiting that answer out of your available budget.
What to prepare before opening the form
This checklist combines fields in the official form with the disclosure required by §4.2:
- The receiving team’s Team ID, with access to verify it.
- A work email on your website’s domain, associated with that team.
- Your name, role and LinkedIn profile; company website, city and country.
- Latest funding-round date, investors and round amount where applicable; a partner code or verification link if you have one.
- Annual revenue, current monthly AI spending, team size, industry and available traction data.
- Intended services and usage; a record of previous promotional credits.
As Kiia’s editorial preparation advice, add a short workflow description: the triggering event, required data, proposed action and person who approves it. If you have no observed traffic yet, explain how you will measure it during the pilot.
How to apply, step by step
- Create or find your team. The form links to the Team ID location in the console and to free team creation. Check that it belongs to the company requesting the benefit.
- Verify the email. It must use your company website’s domain and be associated with the specified team. Resolve mismatches before submitting.
- Complete company details and intended usage. Provide current, verifiable funding, revenue, AI spending and team information. Disclose earlier credits and use a partner code only if it applies to you.
- Review the terms and submit one application. The page estimates about five minutes to complete the form; gathering the information may take longer. Keep a copy of your submission.
- Respond to verification and review the email decision. SpaceXSI may verify company and funding details, contact investors or request documents (§4.3). Failure to provide requested information within ten days may result in rejection or withdrawal of approval.
The application page says credits are sized to your stage and current usage, with the first tranche ready the same day if approved. The terms, §5.1 and §5.5, specify rolling review without a committed review or issuance timeline. That message does not promise approval on the day you submit.
How credits are released: 20% and 80%
| Stage | What the provider publishes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Approval | 20% is released | Award amount, Team ID and applied balance |
| Once you are up and running | The remaining 80% is released automatically | Second-tranche criteria in your approval email |
| Expiry | Six months after application to the account, unless approval states otherwise | Exact dates, conditions for each tranche and remaining balance |
Sources: program page and terms §1.4, §5 and §6.5, reviewed October 23, 2026. “Up and running” alone establishes neither a timeline nor a universal usage threshold. Ask for clarification of ambiguous criteria before counting on the second tranche.
The official sources do not describe dollar-for-dollar matching of your spending. They describe an award released in tranches, with criteria set in the approval. Do not budget reimbursements or credits proportional to every dollar consumed.
The balance is denominated in USD and offsets eligible charges at your account’s applicable rates; usage beyond the balance is billed under the applicable terms (§6.2). Unused balance is forfeited at expiry (§6.6).
What is excluded
Under §6.1 and §6.7 of the terms, exclusions cover taxes, charges before issuance or after expiry, third-party products and services, Marketplace items, X Corp. services such as X Premium, professional services, hardware and past-due amounts. Separate committed-spend or prepaid arrangements are also excluded unless agreed in writing.
Credits have no cash value, cannot be transferred and cannot be combined with the provider’s other promotions for the same services without written agreement. Tax treatment is the company’s responsibility (§8); confirm your obligations through the appropriate channel.
Using credits for agents in production
The official page shows sales, recruiting, metrics and overdue-invoice examples. The controls below are Kiia’s recommendations for designing those workflows in a B2B company; verify the integrations, permissions and costs of your implementation.
| Workflow | First bounded task | Control before acting |
|---|---|---|
| Sales follow-up | Draft a reply and CRM update from an authorized conversation | Human approval of the message and a record on the correct opportunity |
| Weekly metrics | Prepare a report linked to its source data | Read access, a reporting cutoff and a numerical review before publication |
| Collections | Identify overdue invoices and draft reminders | Confirm payment status and recipient; authorize sending and record it in the accounting system |
| Recruiting | Organize applications against documented criteria and prepare the next step | Limited candidate-data access and human review before contacting or rejecting anyone |
Start with a measurable task such as recovering forgotten sales. Define secure permissions, record writes in the source system and prevent duplicate writes during retries. For implementation choices, read Grok Bot in production and Dots vs Grok Bot. The Financio example develops an expense ledger; your accounting still needs validation.
Budget for the day the balance ends
Measure cost per completed task, including retries, external tools, infrastructure and human review. Compare the pilot with your account’s rates without a promotion. Set alerts and your own spending limits, and decide which tasks pause or move to a person when the balance runs out. Our guide to the real cost of an AI agent includes costs that model credits do not pay for.
Comparing it with Claude, OpenAI and Google
For Grok, confirm the shared balance and second-tranche criteria. With Claude for Startups, check availability and direct API conditions; with OpenAI for Startups, check the access route and written offer. For Google, identify the program tier and eligible Cloud services in the full credits comparison. Each guide keeps its own review date; one provider’s conditions do not establish another’s.
The comparisons hub brings these routes together. If your decision depends on tools, permissions and operations, continue with Claude vs OpenAI for agents in production.
