WhatsApp, Telegram or web chat: which channel should your sales agent use?
In 60 seconds: choose WhatsApp when prospects already send inquiries there and you can maintain opt-in, templates and human support. Telegram fits a community that already uses it and is willing to start the bot. Web chat serves visitors on your site and can back up either channel, provided it has an independent contact route. Keep the case in CRM, verify identity before showing private data and pause sends when a person takes over. Each channel still needs those controls.

Verdict by business profile
| Your situation | Where I would start | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Leads already message your business on WhatsApp | WhatsApp Business Platform | Applicable opt-in, templates, market pricing and an inbox with an owner |
| Partners or a community already work in Telegram | A Telegram bot | Whether they will open the bot and whether you can associate the conversation with the right case |
| The inquiry starts on your website or portal | Web chat | Session continuity, accessibility and authentication for private information |
| You need a way out when messaging fails | Web chat plus a form or human contact | Whether the alternative route depends on the component that failed |
A buyer asks for distributor terms and returns days later to correct an order. The channel receives both messages. Your operation must preserve the owner, proposal version and permission to reply. The guide to CRM as the source of truth and WhatsApp as the channel develops that continuity.
WhatsApp vs Telegram bots for business: decision table
We compare WhatsApp’s integration platform, a conventional Telegram bot and a custom or purchased web chat. The WhatsApp Business app and bots connected to Telegram Business have their own conditions. “Web chat” does not name a vendor with a shared price or SLA.
| Criterion | WhatsApp Business Platform | Telegram Bot API | Web chat | Official sources |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reach in LATAM | Twilio discusses LATAM use; current penetration by segment: not published / verify | Comparable LATAM penetration in bot documentation: not published / verify; validate with your audience | Serves visitors who reach the site; measure reach using your traffic | WhatsApp on Twilio, Telegram, web |
| Entry price and cost | Meta charges by market and category. Twilio: USD 0.005 per inbound or outbound message, plus Meta. 360dialog Regular: €49 per number/month, plus Meta | Messaging at no cost by default, subject to limits; optional paid broadcasts. Add infrastructure and operation | No common price; license or development, hosting, model and support depend on your solution | Meta, Twilio, 360dialog, Telegram FAQ |
| Templates and opt-in | Opt-in and opt-outs; approved templates outside the 24-hour window | Users must start the bot or add it to a group; that does not authorize any campaign | Define consent and data purpose; opening the widget does not authorize follow-up elsewhere | WhatsApp policy, starting a bot, Telegram terms |
| User identity | Number identifies the channel user; it does not establish authority over an account or order | User ID; optional username. A contact button can request the phone number | Anonymous session or authenticated account, depending on implementation; a cookie does not prove business identity | WhatsApp, User and KeyboardButton, web sessions |
| Human handoff | Policy requires a clear escalation route; the actual inbox depends on your solution | Build a human queue or inbox. Telegram Business allows bots on accounts; check that setup separately | Implement assignment, opening hours and alternative contact in your inbox | WhatsApp escalation, Telegram Business, web transport |
| Data location and ownership | Channel and provider process messages; do not assume exclusive control of all copies. Review contracts and exports | Telegram and your backend participate; review retention and deletion. The business does not exclusively control the entire archive | You choose the backend and vendors; self-hosting does not remove third-party copies either | WhatsApp data, Telegram retention, browser storage |
| MCP status | 360dialog advertises Messaging MCP in Premium (€99 per number/month plus Meta): provider offering; GA/preview status not published / verify | Documented HTTPS Bot API; official GA/preview MCP: not published / verify | Not applicable to the widget; evaluate any MCP connection to CRM or tools separately | 360dialog, Bot API, web API |
| Integration authentication | Provider credentials; confirm scope and rotation for the chosen route | Bot token; webhook supports a secret to validate its origin | Backend session and controls depend on design; never give tool credentials to the browser | Twilio API, Telegram token and webhook, cookies |
| Respect for user permissions | WhatsApp identity grants no CRM access: authorize every query | Telegram ID grants no CRM access: link the account and permissions | Backend must validate account, organization and action on every request | WhatsApp identity, Telegram User, web session; CRM authorization: your design |
| Integrations | API and webhooks; CRM and inbox need connection and configuration | API, webhooks or polling; CRM and human queue need implementation | Browser-server transport; business connectors depend on the backend | WhatsApp, Telegram, WebSocket |
| Limits and LATAM support | Channel restrictions and provider support; local language and SLA: verify contract | Sending limits and 429 errors; commercial LATAM SLA: not published / verify | Owned or contracted limits, availability and support; no universal SLA | WhatsApp policy, 360dialog, Telegram limits, web transport limits |
These sources provide no current, consistent measurement of the three channels among LATAM B2B buyers. Ask for evidence by country and segment. Platform availability does not establish that your customers want to use it.
Calculate the cost of your operation
Our price check found a discrepancy: Meta’s page describes service messages and certain utility replies as free; Twilio’s page, dated September 2026, describes charges within the window and retains references to free messaging elsewhere. The Meta rate applicable to your account remains “verify” until the provider confirms country, category, date and terms. Do not budget on the assumption that every reply is free.
Use this calculation with your records: monthly cost = channel or provider license + applicable messaging charges + infrastructure and model + inbox and support + maintenance. For WhatsApp, separate inbound and outbound traffic by category and destination. For Telegram, distinguish ordinary traffic from paid broadcasts. For web chat, also budget for abandoned sessions, recovery and abuse. Compare the same tasks and support hours.
The comparison of direct Meta access, Twilio and 360dialog covers the connection route. Choosing Telegram for its lack of an ordinary message charge still leaves the inbox and operation to resolve.
Criteria for choosing and maintaining a channel
Start with the inquiries you already receive: country, origin, language, need and preferred channel. A partner community already using Telegram can try a bot without adopting another habit. For leads arriving on WhatsApp from campaigns, check its rules before proposing an app change. If an inquiry starts while a buyer reads a specification on your website, let them continue there.
Then define what the agent may do. Looking up a public catalog can work with an anonymous session. Showing negotiated prices or changing an order requires linking channel identity to an authorized account. Record that verification and scope tools to that customer; knowing a number or chat ID is insufficient.
When a person takes over, save the owner and human-support state in the shared record. Pause automated replies and follow-ups, including queued sends, and define who may resume them. Test a transfer involving a corrected order and a duplicate message before expanding use.
If the business line or purpose changes, review when to separate WhatsApp numbers. The channel account and CRM need compatible access boundaries.
Web chat as a fallback
Prepare a support URL that opens without installing another app. Offer it before a failure, for example on your site and in permitted communications. If WhatsApp stops delivering messages, a new WhatsApp message cannot be your only way to explain the alternative.
The transfer should recover a case using a temporary reference and validate access before showing its contents. Keep phone numbers, histories and credentials out of the URL. An anonymous visitor can leave a new inquiry while the team verifies how to link it to the previous one.
The fallback widget needs a route that works if the conversation backend fails: a form, email or staffed phone number. Show opening hours and the next step. If a person already owns the case, changing channels must preserve the agent’s paused state. Test mobile, keyboard navigation, session expiry and reconnection too.
When to choose none of them
If a specification page or short form resolves the inquiry, start there. If it requires sensitive information and you cannot yet verify the requester, keep it in an authenticated portal or with a person. If nobody will handle exceptions, narrow the scope before opening an external bot.
Also postpone the channel if you cannot define data purpose, retention and ownership of the work, or if provider terms do not permit the intended use. Web chat still requires those decisions: they depend on where you host history and which services receive messages.
For other architecture decisions, see the comparisons hub. If you already have a specific case, our systems integration service can help define a pilot’s sources, permissions and human transfer.
Frequently asked questions
Should a business in LATAM choose a WhatsApp or Telegram bot?
Choose based on the channel your customers already use and the process you can support. WhatsApp fits when sales inquiries already arrive there and you can operate its rules and costs. Telegram fits an audience that already uses it and will start the bot. Validate preferences by country and segment; this comparison assigns no regional market share.
Is a Telegram bot free?
Telegram allows bot messaging at no cost by default, with limits and an optional paid broadcast feature. The backend, model, CRM integration, inbox and human support still have costs. Telegram Business is a separate setup whose conditions need checking.
Can web chat continue a WhatsApp conversation?
Yes, with a designed transfer using a shared case, validated access and an owner. The browser does not inherit WhatsApp identity or permission. Use a temporary reference and verify the user before showing private data; offer a form or human contact if web chat also fails.
